Summer 2023

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Happy Summer!
As we find ourselves in the midst of this beautiful season, I pray that all has been well, and the summer months provide ample time for rest and relaxation.
The Department has been extremely busy in its ecumenical endeavors! Of note, the 101st meeting of the North American Orthodox-Catholic Theological Consultation was held from May 16-18th at St. Augustine’s Seminary of Toronto. In many ways, this meeting marked a positive turning point in the Consultation’s future. The Consultation resolved its discussions on the topic of “Orthodox-Catholic Marriages” by completing a joint statement on the theology and practice of marriage in both churches. This document, set for publication, will offer specific pastoral recommendations for the care and spiritual growth of Catholic-Orthodox families.
Additionally, the Central Committee meeting of the World Council of Churches was held from June 21-27th in Geneva, Switzerland. His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew offered the opening homily that recalled the 75th anniversary of the founding of the WCC in 1948. Moreover, as a Central Committee member and delegate of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, I participated in a fruitful discussion on unity and diversity at the plenary session on unity and diversity.
Within our own Department, we were pleased to warmly welcome our summer intern, Antoni Zlatanovski. Antoni joins us through the Orthodox Christian Studies Center Internship Program through Fordham University.
Many preparations for the growth and impact of the Department are diligently underway. Continue to lookout for updates on the “How-to” Green the parish series with parish spotlight features highlighting the diverse ways parishes around the country are answering the call to be stewards of creation.
I pray that the information available in this Summer Newsletter will keep you closer to our mission and don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions or if you want to be engaged.

Respectfully yours,
Protopresbyter Nicolas Kazarian, Ph.D.
