Please post in connection with remembering Fr. George with this note:  An important contribution from Hellenic College & Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology.  Fr. George was one of the earliest graduates among clergy educated in the United States, when the Seminary was on a converted estate in Pomfret, CT, before moving to its present location in Brookline, MA.  He is the last person from the Pomfret era to fall asleep in the Lord.

To all in our HCHC community,

I was deeply saddened, as many of you must be, to learn of the passing of Fr. George Poulos at the age of 100. He was our oldest living graduate and the last person to have entered Holy Cross at its original location in Pomfret, Connecticut, before finishing his studies here in Brookline in 1948.

Fr. George’s love for our Scholi remained undimmed throughout his long and extraordinarily fruitful life, as did his attachment to the Pomfret estate. Thanks to his friendship with the current owner, graduates of the Pomfret era and their families were able to return there in 2007 for a reunion luncheon marking the seventieth anniversary of the School’s founding. His many books were proudly published by Holy Cross Orthodox Press and remain a lasting legacy.

Fr. Poulos was recognized for a lifetime of remarkable accomplishments in 2017 when Holy Cross awarded him the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity. The accompanying citation read:

From your days as a seminarian at Pomfret to the present day, you have shown unwavering devotion both to the Greek Orthodox Church in America and to this School, which counts you among its most distinguished and beloved graduates. Longest-serving pastor of a single parish in the history of the Archdiocese, prolific author, living link to and historian of the legendary Pomfret decade, tireless member of  countless organizations dedicated to advancing Hellenism and Orthodoxy in America, you have been, and continue to be, a shining example of what a most devoted priest of the Church and a proud American should be.
