I first heard this remarkable theologian as a first year seminarian at Holy Cross in 1977, following the first edition of his now contemporary classic, The Orthodox Church (now in its 3rd edition, still the single best introduction in the English language; copies in our bookstore). His address was outstanding, some of which I can still recall as if yesterday (with a wonderful Oxfordian accent to boot!). His companion volume, The Orthodox Way, has been a staple gift to all graduates for years (succinct and inviting introduction to spirituality; copies in our bookstore). Then, while pastoring in Minneapolis, our parish hosted him Pentecost weekend when he stayed at our home, met a large group at a larger home for an intimate evening together, and led the full Vespers of Pentecost Sunday for the broad pan-Orthodox community of Minnesota. His delightful humanity – as such an accomplished scholar – easily shone through for anyone who interacted with him a substantive way. His dry sense of humor was just lovely. Finally, I heard his keynote address at the 2019 inaugural conference of the International Orthodox Theologian Association (IOTA) in Romania. His legacy will continue to reverberate for generations since so many worldwide have been impacted by his witness – scholars, monks, clergy, and people of all backgrounds (including many who joined the Orthodox Church). May his memory be eternal! – Fr. Harry
